The Muscular System

The muscular system is the system responsible for the movement of you body.  The muscles in this system, make up 60%of total body weigh.  That means that if you're heavy, you could just be all muscle *<:-)

There are three different muscle tissures.  The three are smooth, skeletal and cardiac.

-The smooth muscles are commonly called "involuntary".  The reason for this is obvious, they're involuntary.  If you don't know what that means, it means that you don't control them consiously.  The muscles are composed of a spindle-shaped cell, each having a central nucleus.  The locations of smooth muscles are the skin, internal organs, reproductive systems, major blood vessels, and excretory system.

-Skeletal muscle tissues are composed of long fibers, surrounded by a membranous sheath.  A skeletal muscle is a votary muscle.  If you didn't know what that is, it's the oppisite of involuntary.  Most of the muscles are attachs to the skeleton by connective tissue attachments called tendons.

-Cardiac muscles are also involuntary.  The mechaism of cardiac contractions is not yet understood.

The connective tissue is covered in the skeletal system, but just for a quick reference, the different types are ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Since I didn't mention tendons, the are the main attachment tisssue of skeletal muscle.

Functions
Smooth muscle is found in organs made up of other tissues, such as the heart and intestines, which contain layers of connective tissue. Skeletal muscle is usually found in groups, creating muscular structures resembling organs in function. These often ripple the skin visibly during muscular action. The shape of the muscular organ is dependent on its location and function.

Muscles that are excercied regularly react quickly and powerfully.  After excessive use, muscles my hypertone, which means that muscles increase in size because of the increase in size of the muscle tissue.
